According to research conducted by consumer group Which? Money, you could save as much as £59 on a car insurance policy just by buying online, rather than on the phone.

Researchers claimed to represent a 45-year-old couple with a medium-risk car, living in a low-risk area that had accumulated five years no-claims bonus. They then requested car insurance quotes from three of the leading car insurance companies in the UK - Budget, Churchill and the Post Office - both on the phone and online. The results showed that online shoppers could make substantial savings.

The biggest online saving came from the Post Office, which quoted a premium of £341 on the phone and £282 online - a saving of 17%. However, there were substantial savings to be made from each provider's online service - a 16% saving through Churchill and a 5% saving through Budget.

So why are these savings so substantial?

Internet operations are simply more efficient for companies to run. They have fewer overheads and generally employ less staff - consequently they can pass these savings on to consumers.
