Ultrasound Technician Job Description

Ultrasounds are generally associated with the field of the obstetrics and the ultrasound imaging that is used during the pregnancy period this technology includes various other diagnostic application. Ultrasound technician work in various sonography specializations and they enjoy wide variety of advancement opportunities.  In the current world the healthcare providers are generally sifting from the radiologic diagnostic procedure as they prefer non invasive, safer ultrasound procedures that are increasing needs for the ultrasound technicians.    


Education:

Ultrasound technician will complete the 2 year course work and the clinical internship from the accredited programs resulting in the associate degrees. The partial list of the course work will include physiology, ethics, medical terminology and anatomy along with the hands on color flow Doppler and the gray scale training. The employers require the technician to hold the registration from the ARDMS department. After becoming the ultrasound technician the technician must undergo continuing education classes in order to maintain the registration.  


Considerations:

Most of the ultrasound technicians work at the hospitals, diagnostic laboratories, medical centers, clinics and the doctor's office. The technicians work for about 40 hour a week and the technicians who are working at the hospitals will work in evenings and in the weekends.

Several specialization areas are available in field of sonography and it includes neurosonography, cardiac, vascular, abdominal, gynecological and obstetric sonography.  The specialization in any particular area will help in increasing the opportunities, advancement and the salary potentials. Ultrasound technicians are generally the online resources for any people in the medical industry and they can become the chief technical director and the ultrasound technologist. Career opportunities in various fields like commercial companies, medical administration, research and education are available.

Ultrasounds are the diagnostic imaging tool that uses the sound waves for generating the images of the patient's blood flow, internal organs and the tissues. The ultrasound technicians also called as the sonographers, analyze the images, administer the ultrasound exams and then summarize the findings for presiding physicians.  They work directly with the patients, keep the patients record, maintains and adjusts the equipments which is the main duty of the ultrasound technician.   


Potential:

In the year 2008 the ultrasound technicians were drawing a salary of about $61,980 and the other category of technicians earning the salary between the ranges of $52,570-$73,680 per year. There is an increasing demand for the ultrasound technicians in the current trend and it is due to the improvement in the medical field.
